Located on 640 acres in Clear Lake, South Dakota, Tech Ord houses all manufacturing, engineering and support operations within 88,000 square feet of manufacturing space across 22 buildings designed specifically for high-rate manufacture of various energetic devices and materials. The high-rate production lines are designed for efficient and cost-effective change over to produce hundreds of different products. The facility also has 25 storage bunkers for storage of raw material and finished goods explosives, as well as a state-of-the-art hazardous waste treatment facility to allow on-site disposal of energetic and hazardous waste. Tech Ord is a certified small business under NAICS 332993 (Ammunition Manufacturing, except small arms), and our quality system is ISO 9001:2015 registered. Tech Ord is currently the only US Army qualified producer of Lead Azide.

Primary Explosive Manufacturer
Tech Ord is the only facility in the United States that has a full-scale, US Army qualified process for the production of Lead Azide PB(N3)2. Tech Ord has the ability to produce Dextrinated Lead Azide (MIL-L-3055), RD-1333 Lead Azide (MIL-DTL-46225), and Special Purpose Lead Azide (MIL-L-14758). Tech Ord supplies these lead azide variants to the US Defense sector for use in ammunition and fuze detonators, and to various commercial sectors, including the mining industry for blasting caps and detonators. The automated and remote-monitored manufacturing process ensures exceptional and repeatable quality control, resulting in superior product handling and performance. Tech Ord’s on-site analytical laboratory provides the capability for full product characterization and certification to military standards and/or customer specifications.
Impulse Cartridge BBU-35/B
The BBU-35/B Impulse Cartridge consists of a pressure producing propellant initiated by application of a specified current to the bridgewire connecting the center pin and cartridge body. The BBU-35/B is used on various aircraft to deploy RR-170 and RR-188 chaff, M206 infrared countermeasure flares and training flares. It is electrically initiated from aircraft power.
